AmFirst, WVTM13, and Better Basics Collaboration Puts More Than 1,300 Books in the Hands of Local Children

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — May 12, 2026 — AmFirst is proud to announce the successful conclusion of its 2026 Better Basics partnership, a campaign designed to support early childhood literacy across Central Alabama. Through a month-long book drive and an employee volunteer day at a local school, AmFirst members, employees, and community partners came together to make a meaningful impact for young readers.

In March, AmFirst branches welcomed donations of new children’s books and financial contributions in support of Better Basics’ annual book drive, in partnership with WVTM 13. Because of the generosity of members, employees, and the wider community, AmFirst provided more than 1,300 books to children in our local neighborhoods.

“Access to books in early childhood is one of the most powerful predictors of a child’s long-term success, yet so many children in our communities don’t have that opportunity,” said Kevin Morris, President and CEO of AmFirst. “At AmFirst, we believe investing in education is investing in the future of the communities we serve. We’re honored to support Better Basics’ mission and grateful to our members and employees who stepped up to help get more books into the hands of local kids.”

On May 7, 2026, AmFirst proudly adopted Sun Valley Elementary School through Better Basics’ educational enrichment programs. On this day, more than 30 AmFirst employees volunteered their time to read with students and lead engaging literacy lessons.

“Better Basics is working every day to close the literacy gap, and we are proud to stand beside them,” said Jody Mattson, AmFirst Director of Philanthropy and Community Engagement. “From collecting books in our branches to spending time in local schools, this annual partnership shows what can happen when a community comes together around children and education.”

Better Basics plays a vital role in supporting children in lower-income neighborhoods, where access to age-appropriate books is limited. Through their book distribution, reading, and enrichment programs, they strive to ensure every child has a book of their own and the encouragement needed to strengthen their reading skills.

AmFirst’s partnership with Better Basics and WVTM 13 reflects the credit union’s broader commitment to financial education, youth development, and community investment across the region.
