Family Savings CU Partners with Jacksonville State University for Financial Wellness Program

Rainbow City, AL – Family Savings Credit Union partnered with Jacksonville State University to launch the Family Savings Credit Union Financial Wellness Program for all Jax State students.

On Thursday, November 16th, Family Savings held a reception and check presentation to announce the partnership with the JSU Foundation. A check for $250,000 was presented to University President, Dr. Don Killingsworth, and JSU Foundation Executive Director, Dr. Alan Medders, Ph.D., and Jacksonville State University.

“We could not be prouder of the opportunity to work with the students at JSU. Improving financial literacy is our mission. In our line of work, we see every day the knowledge gap between knowing how to be financially secure in one’s future and being dependent on high-cost credit and long-term debt. Family Savings is proud to be a small part of the solution for these students,” commented Danny Varnon, President and CEO of Family Savings.

The credit union has a rich history of helping the communities they serve with everything from low-cost checking, lower-interest loans, and higher-interest Certificates of Deposit. Along with these great services, Family Savings believes in the importance of financial literacy for its members and the community as a whole. A great base in financial literacy not only helps the individual but also everyone else within the community.

The new Family Savings wellness program aims to raise the level of financial literacy for those students attending the university. They will have access to classes (presentations and hands-on experiences) on many topics such as budgeting, reading and improving their credit report/score, paying student loans, filing taxes, and much more.

“Unfortunately, we see more and more students not having the financial knowledge they need to be successful,” said Don Killingsworth, JSU President. “Any of the broad knowledge that you need as a working adult, or any working person really, that they may not have been exposed to prior. Not in the classroom, not in textbooks. This is just working knowledge that you need to be a successful person.”

Family Savings is a not-for-profit financial cooperative that serves those who live, work, or worship in many of the northeast AL counties as well as those who live or work in northwest GA. The credit union works to advance their members’ and communities’ financial lives. A good financial basis will enhance the members for the rest of their lives, well beyond their college years.

Family Savings serves over 75,000 members and has $879 million in assets. For more information about Family Savings CU or their financial literacy initiatives, please visit their website at familysavingscu.com or give us a call at 888-311-3728.
