Gulf Winds Credit Union Joins Community in Rebuilding Northwest Florida Following Hurricane Isaias Devastation

Pensacola, Florida – Investing in the recovery of those affected by Hurricane Isaias, Gulf Winds Credit Union is helping local communities move forward after the storm. The organization contributed $50,000 to United Way of West Florida’s Recovery Fund, which raised more than $325,000 through a community fundraising effort led by United Way of West Florida and local media partners. Gulf Winds also donated $5,000 to Pensacola State College’s Pirates CARE Program, which is raising funds to support students during this challenging time.

Hurricane Isaias left a devastating mark on Northwest Florida. Santa Rosa County has reported over $240 million of private and public damage. Escambia County has reported over $60 million in public damage, with the assessment of private property still underway.

“It’s our mission to help individuals in the community reach their full potential with financial security, housing, and other resources,” said Laura Gilliam, United Way of West Florida President and CEO. “Since Hurricane Isaias, this mission has become even more important. We’re proud to see how our community has come together, and partners like Gulf Winds give us hope that recovery is more than possible.”

“Recovering from a hurricane takes time, and students shouldn’t have to navigate the challenge alone,” said Andrea Krieger, Pensacola State College Executive Director of Institutional Development. “Our Pirates CARE Program aids students facing hardship so they can focus on their education. We’re grateful for partners like Gulf Winds who step up when our students and community need them most.”

Gulf Winds is on a mission to invest in the future of this region. Following its recent announcement that it will rebrand to TruWorth Credit Union, the organization is continuing to build on its legacy of service while expanding its commitment to helping people and communities thrive. So far this year, the organization has given back nearly $300,000 and volunteered over 3,000 hours to support the community. Gulf Winds has also supported their own team members as they faced challenges following Hurricane Isaias, offering hotel rooms, grants, and hot lunches during the workday accompanied by non-perishables to take home for their families.

“When a hurricane impacts our communities, recovery is about more than rebuilding,” said Daniel Souers, Gulf Winds Credit Union President and CEO. “It’s about showing up for one another. It’s helping a family recover, or a student stay on track. It’s letting people know they aren’t facing these challenges alone. That’s the kind of community I’m proud to be a part of.”
