Family Savings Credit Union commits $200,000 to financial literacy at Gadsden State

10-year partnership will expand financial education and resources for students

GADSDEN, Ala. — Family Savings Credit Union has committed $200,000 over the next 10 years to support financial literacy education for students at Gadsden State Community College through a partnership with the Gadsden State Cardinal Foundation.

Through a $20,000 annual investment, Family Savings will help support a long-term financial literacy initiative designed to give students practical knowledge and resources to make informed financial decisions during college and beyond.

The partnership will support financial literacy workshops, one-on-one financial counseling opportunities, digital learning resources, campuswide awareness efforts and programs focused on financial success after college. Educational topics will include budgeting, credit management, responsible borrowing, loan repayment and long-term financial planning.

“Helping people build a strong financial future is at the heart of what we do as a credit union,” said Danny Varnon, president and CEO of Family Savings Credit Union. “This partnership gives us an opportunity to reach students at an important point in their lives and provide practical financial knowledge they can carry with them long after graduation. We are proud to invest in Gadsden State students and in the future of the communities we serve.”

The partnership establishes Family Savings as a financial literacy partner for Gadsden State and gives the credit union an active role in financial education programming, including workshops, seminars, educational resources and student engagement opportunities.

For Family Savings, the commitment builds on the credit union’s longstanding focus on financial education and community involvement throughout North Alabama and North Georgia.

This partnership is in addition to the $250,000 Family Savings Credit Union Financial Literacy Program at Jacksonville State University, established in 2023.

Financial literacy can play an important role in helping students understand how everyday financial decisions affect their future, from establishing a budget and building credit to managing debt and preparing for major financial milestones.

By working with Gadsden State and the Cardinal Foundation, Family Savings aims to make those resources more accessible to students and help them develop the confidence and knowledge needed to make sound financial decisions throughout their lives.
