The partial federal government shutdown -- which began Dec. 21 -- has become the longest in American history.
As many of the approximately 100,000 federal employees in Georgia went through their first pay cycle without compensation, more and more credit unions have reached out to help suffering members.

Kinetic Credit Union and WRBL-TV recently presented a local 2nd grade teacher with a Golden Apple, an award recognizing teaching excellence.
Lori Bailey, a second-grade teacher at Stowers Elementary School, was nominated by Tom Wierzbicki. Wierzbicki told WRBL he was impressed with the wonderful job Bailey does with her students.
Bailey is a graduate of Troy University. She's a 10-year teaching veteran who said she enjoys her job.

Georgia's Own Credit Union recently replaced the familiar EQUITABLE sign on the 100 Peachtree building in Atlanta with new, interactive signs.

Police are investigating a Jan. 4 incident in which a man tried to cash a $3,000 stolen check -- before he was stopped by a vigilant Delta Community Credit Union teller.
The man presented the check and his ID to the teller at the Haynes Bridge Road location on Jan. 4, according to an Alpharetta Roswell Herald article. The teller noticed the check the man handed her was flagged in the system.
As the teller sought out her manager, the man said he had to go to work and asked her to hand him back the check. The manager refused and instead called the police.

The VITA program offers free tax filing assistance to individuals with low to moderate income. The Teddy Bear Clinic, led by Mercer University School of Medicine students, was the highlight of the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System’s 10th annual Student Success Expo & STEM Festival, which attracted about 15,000 participants.
